A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SEDATION AND WHAT TO EXPECT FROM IT

Sedation involves administering a sedative drug to induce relaxation. It’s important to distinguish between sedation and general anaesthesia. With sedation, you remain awake but feel drowsy and less aware of your surroundings. The sedative drugs do not numb the teeth, so a dental injection is still required. However, you’ll be in a more relaxed state before the teeth are numbed.

In certain sedation methods, such as administering the sedative drug midazolam through a vein, patients often have limited recollection of the treatment due to the sedative’s effects (which most patients find acceptable). Sedative drugs used in dental settings have high safety margins, and recovery is typically quicker compared to general anaesthesia. Additionally, the waiting list for sedation is generally shorter than that for general anaesthesia at hospitals.

Sedation options

At Bristol Dental Specialists, various methods are available for administering sedative drugs. After thorough discussion and assessment, you may be deemed suitable for sedation through:
  • Inhalation, where you breathe in gas through a nosepiece.
  • Intravenous injection, delivered into a vein in your hand or arm.
  • Oral ingestion, where you swallow a medication.

During a pre-treatment consultation, either in person or via a FREE VIDEO Consultation, we’ll determine which method is most suitable for you. Factors such as your level of dental anxiety, the duration of the planned treatment, medical history, and social circumstances will be considered in selecting the optimal sedation option.

Can children and teenagers undergo sedation?

Yes, they can. However, certain sedation methods, such as intravenous sedation, are typically reserved for older teenagers or adults. Generally, for individuals under 12 years old, inhalation sedation is the preferred method. However, it’s important to note that the physical and mental development of each individual varies and may not always align with their chronological age. At Bristol Dental Specialists, we tailor an anxiety control plan based on an individual assessment of psychological and physical maturity, taking into account any associated risks.
