Feeling nervous about visiting the dentist, or do you know someone who is? Sedation can help make dental treatment more relaxing and even a positive experience!
We’re pleased to announce that Bosun Hong, one of our Specialist Oral Surgeons, now provides a sedation service at Bristol Dental Specialists. Bosun has significant experience in administering sedation and has received postgraduate training in conscious sedation techniques as part of her Specialist training, along with training from the Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry.
For further details about sedation and arranging an initial discussion with Bosun, please refer below.
Sedation involves administering a sedative drug to induce relaxation. It’s important to distinguish between sedation and general anaesthesia. With sedation, you remain awake but feel drowsy and less aware of your surroundings. The sedative drugs do not numb the teeth, so a dental injection is still required. However, you’ll be in a more relaxed state before the teeth are numbed.
In certain sedation methods, such as administering the sedative drug midazolam through a vein, patients often have limited recollection of the treatment due to the sedative’s effects (which most patients find acceptable). Sedative drugs used in dental settings have high safety margins, and recovery is typically quicker compared to general anaesthesia. Additionally, the waiting list for sedation is generally shorter than that for general anaesthesia at hospitals.
During a pre-treatment consultation, either in person or via a FREE VIDEO Consultation, we’ll determine which method is most suitable for you. Factors such as your level of dental anxiety, the duration of the planned treatment, medical history, and social circumstances will be considered in selecting the optimal sedation option.
Many of our patients with dental anxiety find that sedation helps them relax enough to undergo dental treatment they previously thought was impossible. We would be delighted to have you visit our practice for a Sedation Consultation. Please reach out to us for an initial discussion. Rest assured, if you choose to proceed, you’ll be under the care of experienced professionals. As an introduction to our Sedation services, we’re also offering a Free initial video consultation to discuss your case and address any queries you or your patient may have.
